First Year in our First Home

August 4th marks one year since we drove across the country from California to our first home together in North Carolina. It’s so crazy to believe it’s already been a whole year! Unfortunately, the week before we moved in, we got the news that Elton would be deploying to Puerto Rico for the hurricane-relief efforts TWO days after we arrived.

On this day last year, we woke up early in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee to drive to Jacksonville, ended up getting lost in the Tennessee mountains, received help navigating the giant U-haul truck and trailer from the poor man whose driveway we were blocking, saw a black bear on the way down the mountain, got lost trying to figure out our way around Camp Lejeune, and picked up the keys to our very first apartment! It was definitely a long, exciting Friday. The two of us were able to unpack a few things by ourselves but we had an apartment on the third floor so my little arms weren’t much help. Luckily for us, my brother and my best friend with her fiance were able to drive over to help us unpack the entire truck on Saturday. There was furniture and boxes thrown in every room, but it was nice to have something to keep me occupied while Elton was away.

For the first three months we had our apartment, only I was living there. I would send Elton picture updates of my decorating progress so he knew what to expect when he finally did come home. Once he came home from that trip, we were able to build this house into what we envisioned, together.

There have been so many memories made in this house. It’s been where we learned each other’s patterns, routines, likes and dislikes, and where we added to our little family (Koda and Juno – no human babies yet). We have both grown so much together, as husband and wife, and learned so much about what it takes to help your marriage thrive. So many laughs and tears have been shared within these walls and as excited as we are to finally have a house with a yard someday, this apartment will definitely be missed.

Here are some things we have both learned during this first year in our first home:

  1. How hard it is to carry twenty bags of groceries up three flights of stairs.
  2. Choosing the top floor can also be a good thing, no dealing with noisy upstairs neighbors.
  3. How to master taking care of two dogs in an apartment. (Maybe I’ll do a blog post on this in the future)
  4. There is more than one way to do everything, it isn’t all “my way or the highway”, ex. dishes, laundry, cleaning, etc.

It is also very fitting that our first home together is apartment 3E, since we are Emili and Elton Escaros! All in all this has been an exciting year for us both and I can’t wait to see what the future brings us.

xo Emili
